Down in Bethlehem
Down in Bethlehem
hear the shepherds talk of Jesus,
down in Bethlehem.
Though the night is dark,
hear the shepherds talk of light,
down in Bethlehem
They're raving in the streets;
there's a baby born;
they're raving in the streets.
Some shout of angel throngs,
some of God made man,
here in Bethlehem.
Down in Bethlehem
hear the shepherds talk of God,
and angels in the skies.
Though the night is dark,
hear the shepherds talk of light,
in the darkness of the town
They're raving in the streets;
even simple men;
they're raving in the streets.
Some shout of angel throngs,
and some of God made man,
here in Bethlehem.
Jesus, within a manger
all humble and bare
mary and joseph cradle
in that poor lowly stable.
Proud hearts and human doctrine
our feeble delight
welcome our saviour Jesus this night
This is 'Down in Bethlehem', initially written as a Christmas Praise song in 2008 entitled 'Within the city streets of Bethlehem', or 'Within the darkest night of Bethlehem', with a very different melody.
The words went through several phrases, but the general idea changed little until November 2016 when the song took on a new direction, modernising the attitudes of the people in the city and hopefully bringing the theme to life.
